Our Last Day In Iceland

Nautholsvik beach
We were visiting the last places on our lists and packing our bags, ready to be out of here the next day. We were all a bit sad, though mostly so happy and excited about the lights, about Sigur Ros, The Blue Lagoon, about our day trip to Hofn and that langoustine, so happy that we had experienced Iceland and all it had to offer. That being said we are coming back here to do the things we couldn't do on this trip, partly because of weather, partly because of time...

tiu dropar

He was so cute and so happy to play. This is where we had breakfast and this guy was there to greet us on our way out.

Yummy toggles.

Tiu Dropar was a little cavern slightly below ground. It had a real homely feel to it, the walls were decorated with kitsch grandma's toiletesque paintings and maps and the chairs mostly looked as though they had been sitting around a table in a linoleum lined kitchen forty + years earlier. It was cute.

And they had free milk, which Lloyd was most pleased with.

We have never seen so much bacon! At this point there was still waffles and fruit to come. It was a little like The Laundromat Bar's brunch, but not as good. Though look at all that bacon!

Grotta island

This is where all the puffins hang out in summer time. Sadly no puffins in winter.

We considered hopping across the rocks to the lighthouse, but decided against it. You can walk over there in low tide.

Grotta island 6

Sophie has scoured beaches in about 5 countries now for sea worn glass pieces for her mum. The collection is quite nice.

Nautholsvik beach 2

Nautholsvik beach. This is the beach where everyone comes to swim in summer. They have heated parts of the ocean. Amazing!

Nautholsvik beach 3

That bit in front of us is usually the heated part. It is tradition for people to take a dip in the freezing water before making their way into the warmed parts.

Nautholsvik beach 4

That is where the super warm sea water usually would be.

A bunker for who knows what. I didn't think Iceland had an army?

Black Death beer Iceland

Black death. An Icelandic dark beer. Apparently Slash from Guns and Roses is a fan/ aficionado. Good beer was hard to find in Reykjavik. Most beer for sale was bad 2% watered down cans.

Icelandic fish and chips

We thought, "heck! It's our last night in Iceland, we'd better go out eating Langoustine." I am so glad we thought that. We came back to Icelandic Fish and Chips for their tasty garlic langoustine and this time we were mighty impressed. It was delicious. It came with hand towels and all. We also finished off a few pints of Gull. A local beer in Iceland. It's equivalent to Tooheys extra dry or something in Aus speak, but everything tastes better in Iceland.

Laundromat

We parted ways with langoustine and beers and made our way to Laundromat for our last supper. Lloyd had been trying to order the lamb for the duration of our stay to no avail. It was always on the menu but was always unavailable. This was his last chance, and boy was he pleased when this came out. I got the salmon again. I was not disappointed.

THANK YOU ICELAND!

And we finally come to the end of our Iceland trip. Our advice if you were thinking of visiting this amazing country would be to visit in summer. We'd recommend hiring a car for your whole trip. You must go for an early morning swim at one of the big pools. You must drive down to the Blue Lagoon and relax in the hot blue pools. You only need around 1 or 2 days to really experience Reykjavik city as it's not that big and compared to other European cities it's not as architecturally and culturally exciting. It's outside of the city where things get really exciting. I know this sounds like a big investment but if we were to do Iceland again we would have driven around the whole country along the famous road 1, seeing all the amazing natural sights on the way. We drove to the other side of Iceland in a day so this should give you an idea of the time you'd need. We saw so many things on this trip that we had only seen in movies and on nature documentaries. We will never forget this trip.

Our next blog entry will be a Christmas message!

Iceland is also a wonderful place to see northern lights. So plan a trip to enjoy Northern Lights Adventure.
