Road Trip To Hofn - Part II

Jokulsarlon

After our day long drive across Iceland the day before it was now time to make our journey back from whence we came, hopefully squeezing in the things we missed the day before due to crumby weather. We had been unsuccessful in our mission to see the northern lights far from the light pollution from Reykjavik and we were hoping for some luck in seeing a few more things on our way back including the famous Jokulsarlon floating icebergs pictured above.

Hofn

This was the farmhouse we stayed in overnight near Hofn and our beast of a car.

Hofn 2

This is what it looked like inside. Pretty farm housey.

Hofn 3

This was the view from our window which we spent all night at, hoping for signs of the green and blue sky show, but to no avail.

Hofn 4

And this was a little slice of the farm. It really is that amazing looking, though kind of odd how you go from this...

Hofn 5

to this in minutes?

Hofn 6

Not long into our journey heading back to Reykjavik we realised it had snowed heavily overnight. This was the first thick snow we had experienced in our lives. Again, there was very little snow at the farm as you see above and less than half an hour down the road we see THIS!

Hofn 8

We parked the car immediately after seeing snowflakes. We're from sunny Perth, Australia, of course we stopped.

Sophie started making a snowman, but decided to wear the head as a trophy.

Hofn 14

It was like Narnia... As Adam points out in the video a few photos down.

Boy, I hate my voice!

Jökulsárlón 2

Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, which literally translates to glacial river lagoon.

Jökulsárlón 3

It is so amazing. We had intended to drive a little further up the road to see the less touristy side of the Icebergs as recommended by our host the night before. Alas, we missed the turn off and in this snow a 3 point turn is not an easy manoeuvre.

Jökulsárlón 3

Jökulsárlón 4

The cold affects the nose the worse we found. So much pain!

Jökulsárlón 5

Still getting used to snow. Not sure if we are more impressed by the icebergs or the snow...

Jökulsárlón 6

Both?

Jökulsárlón 8

Jökulsárlón has been used as a filming location for 2 Bond movies, Tomb Raider and Batman Begins. It was pretty spectacular.

Jökulsárlón 11

The icebergs were meant to be a kind of radiant blue, which you can see in some of the photos, unfortunately the snow, despite bringing us great joy, also covered the icebergs. Hence the magical blue glow isn't as apparent. Not to worry though. This place was still worth visiting.

You can see the snow clearly in the beginning of this video.

I'd recommend reading a bit more about this place on the Wikipedia page.

If you'd like to visit Jokulsarlon then you are in luck as it is one of the easier places to find:

Next up - the last part of our drive back to Reykjavik which included one of the most spectacular sights we almost didn't see on this trip.
